By The Sea has been co-created by Jo Riley & Julia Rose. Having met at a yoga class Julia was teaching in the Cotswolds 3 years ago, they are now excited to be working together. Jo was returning to yoga after neurosurgery and was drawn to Julia's caring and non-judgemental attitude in her teaching. In addition to yoga they discovered a second mutual love - the sea. So, when Jo shared her plans to move to St. Ives, Cornwall ideas started to develop, especially when Jo stumbled upon the amazing beach side Porthmeor Artists Studios where the yoga now takes place. Jo & Julia are both excited to help others find some time and space to relax, restore & rejuvenate with kindred spirits through  yoga and being by the sea. Creative and adventurous activities are offered to expand the experience for their guests in the inspirational and light filled St Ives, Cornwall. Scroll down to find out more about Jo & Julia, along with their key partners - Porthmeor Artists Studios, Dr Lauren Cara, St. Ives Surf School.

In brief: Mother, wife, 41, determined, enthusiastic, chatty, reflexologist, super excited to be living in St Ives
Passions: Yoga, surfing, St Ives, helping others with their health & wellbeing, my gorgeous son & long suffering husband.
Could live without: Car journeys.

Jo qualified as a reflexologist in 2004 whilst living & working in London for Unilever. After launching the Dove Real Women Campaign in the UK (2004) Jo relocated to the search of more nature and family life in the country.

Following the birth of her son in 2006 she further developed her knowledge of complementary healthcare studying Five Element Chinese Medicine for a year in 2008 at the College of Traditional Acupuncture.

Following a rare illness and neurosurgery to remove a pituitary tumour in 2013 Jo launched the Garden Retreat.  A tranquil space in her garden offering a range of reflexology treatments (Hot Stone, Maternity, Five Element) amongst nature.

Being by the sea in St Ives, learning to surf with the surf school there and developing a yoga practice have been instrumental in her full recovery from Cushing's disease.

Jo is now studying her 200hour yoga teacher training with Bristol City Yoga and Laura Gilmore, qualifying in December, 2017. In August this year she relocated with her husband and son to St. Ives. She now runs offering Yoga & Reflexology from her studio in Carbis Bay, St. Ives.

If you’re looking to learn to surf in Cornwall then you’ve come to the right place. Situated on Porthmeor beach in the heart of St Ives, and a stone’s throw away from the iconic Tate Gallery is St Ives Surf School, the first and only surf school in St Ives. They provide a wide range of Surf Lessons, SUP Lessons, Sea Kayaking and Coasteering for all ages and abilities.

Jo ("By The Sea" co-creator) learnt to surf with the St Ives School and cannot praise them highly enough. She says "led by Harris Rothschild all of the instructors are expert at not only providing fantastic instruction, it also comes with top-notch safety briefings and masses of encouragement to get you standing up on the board!!"

All of their coaches are fully qualified instructors, CRB checked and trained beach lifeguards. Throughout all of our activities they maintain a safe, fun and enjoyable ocean experience that you will never forget.

Hey, I’m Lauren. Welcome! In this fast-paced online world, I’m truly honoured to have you here.

Through this blog I share with you everything I’ve learned (and continue to learn) about holistic health, wellness and active living. Given my background as a junior doctor, psychology graduate, cancer patient and yoga teacher, the topics I cover range from the super nerdy/scientific to the more spiritual.

Whilst this blog started out as a cathartic way for me to share my “cancer journey” (as well as plenty of bucket list adventures), more recently – basically since I received this amazing news – it’s expanded to include anything that piques my interest and, hopefully, yours too. My personal experience with cancer has highlighted the many ways in which lifestyle choices can affect our ability to deal with once-in-a-lifetime health challenges, as well as the day-to-day challenges we encounter in modern life. I hope that by sharing my story I’ll inspire you to keep embracing life during any tough times, hopefully helping you to become more resilient to whatever life throws your way.

On the edge of Porthmeor Beach, this atmospheric, Grade II listed building, has been an inspiring workspace for artists for over a century. Today, the School of Painting operates out of two of the studios while the Tate Gallery has historically run a residency programme in Studio 5. The remaining studios are rented out to local and national artists. Meanwhile, twelve boats continue to work out of the fishermen’s cellars lying beneath the studios.

Also available for hire by the public is a beautiful room with large windows overlooking the beach. This is where the By The Sea retreat yoga classes will be held. A truly inspiring place to be - close to the sea, amongst artists as well as the culture and tradition of St. Ives
